Providing up-to-date information and bringing the industry together for a sustainable future

Economic, social and environmental sustainability is at the heart of the food and grocery sector. Environmental issues in particular have been a key focus for industry over the past few years, in recognition of the impact the food and grocery sector has.

The food and grocery industry accounts for approximately:

  • 17% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions
  • 14% of energy consumption by UK businesses
  • 10% of all industrial use of public water supply
  • 10% of industrial and commercial waste (about 10 million tonnes a year)
  • 25% of all HGV vehicle kilometres in the UK

(Defra, FISS 2006)

IGD has a long history of bringing businesses together to deliver best practice and to address consumer concerns.
