A free report mapping approaches to portion size across the food and grocery and foodservice sectors.

  • An understanding of how portion sizes are set across a range of organisations.
  • The reasons for development and the basis of current portion size guidance.
  • Recommendations for actions required in order to achieve a consistent context for determining portion sizes across the grocery and food service sectors.

The report will be of use to those working in nutrition, product design, CSR, or regulatory positions involved in determining portion sizes for foods within the grocery and food service sectors.

The report by IGD’s Industry Nutrition Strategy Group maps approaches to portion size across the food and grocery and food service sectors. Activities from a variety of organisations in relation to portion size have been reviewed in order to identify and compare the criteria on which portion guidance is currently based.

Portion size is important for food labelling purposes and from the perspective of nutrient and energy intake. The increasing prevalence of obesity has focused attention on intake in relation to portion size and raised the question of whether guidance is needed on setting portion sizes for particular foods.

This report contains information on:

  • Ways in which portion sizes are defined across a range of organisations spanning government, industry, non-governmental organisations and healthcare professionals
  • criteria on which portion sizes are based and the factors influencing final portion size
  • Recommendations that will help provide the context in which to determine portion size across the food and grocery and foodservice sectors
