The UK economy has continued to grow through the first half of the year – albeit against weak comparables – but the mood amongst both investors and shoppers remains bearish.

The government has produced revised forecasts for future growth but continues to anticipate a steady recovery; other commentators, however, have highlighted the danger of a “double-dip” event and both the US and Japan are already struggling to maintain upward momentum.

The new coalition government is moving to begin rebuilding the national finances but this in itself creates new economic risks since public sector employment will likely contract and expenditure on social security fall.

Even if growth is maintained – the best case scenario – repairing the harms caused by the worst recession in decades will take many years, with implications for investment, competitiveness and sustainability. Concerns over grain production have resulted in a sudden increase in futures prices and renewed media interest in food issues.

On the positive side, however, UK industrial production is edging upwards as businesses benefit from weak Sterling and renewed global demand; grocery manufacturers continue to perform well and retailers are working hard to offer competitive options for shoppers – there is still room for smart businesses to grow sales and profits.

The Food & Grocery Monitor is a new report series from IGD, replacing the previous Quarterly Economic Update to help keep managers in the industry abreast of changes impacting the industry from the outside. Unlike the previous series, the Monitor goes beyond economic coverage to include other relevant information.

It is intended to provide up-to-date information and actionable analysis for managers and planners, combining a range of sources in one concise document. It focuses primarily on the UK, with some international coverage.

The Monitor is published four times in 2010 (this is issue three) and is only available as a set. By ordering, you'll receive all four issues from throughout the year. You can find out more about the previous editions via the link below:
