Packaging legibility – providing clear information for consumers

IGD first published guidance on packaging legibility in 1994. The guidelines were updated in 2003 and remain a useful tool for ensuring clarity of information to consumers.

Current regulations require that food labelling:

  • Must be easy to understand, clearly legible and unable to be removed
  • Must be in a conspicuous place so as to be easily visible
  • Must not be hidden or obscured or interrupted by any other written or pictorial matter

Consumers typically read labels and make purchasing decisions very quickly. It is therefore essential that the information on packaging is clear and legible.

Beyond legislation, a further consideration for products aimed at the UK market is the ageing population. Since, for example, eyesight deteriorates with age it is particularly important to consider the needs of those with sub-optimal vision.
