In November 1909 a group of grocers came together and decided to create a body that would ensure professional standards of training and education in grocery management were met. The Institute of Certificated Grocers was formed. It later merged with the Institute of Food Distribution and IGD was born.

During the course of the last 100 years the food and grocery industry has seen a huge amount of change. We are now a truly world-class industry, delivering consumer goods through efficient supply chains, providing millions of jobs and helping to drive the UK economy.

IGD has seen a lot of changes too – our training and education remain at the core of what we do, but there is so much more to us than that.
